Przemysl Cemetery

Poland Galleries

This is a very large cemetery, on the main Slowackiego street as you leave Przemysl. The cemetery was locked but I was able to find out and then obtain the key from a house across the street from the cemetery. The cemetery has distinct sections, nearest the entrance seems to be stones from the 1930's. Further to the left from the entrance there is a section of post-war memorials to lost families. Extensive renovation of the graves in these sections seems to have taken place. Many stones, often with their inscriptions effaced by erosion are now mounted on new concrete bases. A section of very old graves lies directly in front of the main gate but further in the cemetery and another much larger section of old graves is at the back left of the cemetery (relative to the main gate) on the high ground.

At the very back of the cemetery in front of the main gate, is a section of graves and a memorial to Jews that were murdered by Nazis in September 1939. 102 names are recorded on the memorial. My father's brother, Mendel Salik, was one of a group of about 25 Jews from Sanok that were murdered in the very first days of the German occupation. 102 names are recorded on the memorial (list after gallery). However, these seem to correspond only to the identified victims of a number of different massacres in the region in which an estimated 600 Jews were murdered. See the following links:

The memorial plaque to the Nazi massacres of September 1939 reads:

NB This list seems to have been transcribed with somewhat different spelling from those on the original plaques: for example "Majer Beer", "Jozef Arem". Also there are original plaques which are not listed on the new memorial plaque: for example "Samuel M. Lowenta" died 7.9.39, "Leib Kastner", died 7.9.39, perhaps because they relate to massacres at a different date.
